yorkville-may14 034-portfolioIt is quite the understatement saying that hair color trends have taken us for a spin; they have taken us to space and back, whipping us from planet to planet, like we are some kind of shampooed boomerang – flung to one trend and before we ever get used to it, we return to the source.

Sarah Boyd of Forbes Magazine sums it up best: “From the brightest blondes, to the deepest browns and even to senior citizen inspired shades of grey, the hair color game has been anything but boring. You might be wondering, “what could possibly be next?”, because at this rate, a truly jaw dropping surprise would be hard to achieve without coming off as gimmicky or, dare I say it, tacky.”

While Boyd seems to be a bit pessimistic regarding hair color trends (and really, who could blame her?), she still holds out hope that a color will come along and change the way we look at hair altogether – and that might have come along. It’s called “Bronde” and Boyd is anticipating that it will be huge, the hair color trend that will close out 2015 and quite possible ring in the New Year.

You might be wondering, “What exactly is “Bronde”?” You can probably figure it out; it’s right in the name – a combination of blonde or brunette – not quite blonde, not quite brunette – that weird limbo between the two colors. It seems that many women are straddling the tightrope between color spectrums. Beyoncé, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gisele Bundchen, and Hannah Davis are just a few of the celebrities straddling that tightrope! Will you follow suit?

Getting a fresh new hairstyle is like getting a new body, a new face – well, maybe not that dramatic, but the rejuvenation that sweeps over your body when you see your reflection moments after you get your hair styled is a feeling not easily replaceable. It’s as if you’re emerging out of a spa after a session. It’s as if your soul’s been manicured and pedicured. It’s that spectacular, which is why summer is such an invigorating time; it’s the season of hairdos! This is especially true in Toronto where we dig ourselves out of the winter darkness and are ready to take the summer by storm – and that usually means changing our look, whatever that may be.

bad-wigWe know it’s August and summer will be done before we know it, but do you have a wedding coming up or maybe another event? If that’s the case, you need to be happy with your hair, whether for official event photographs, photo booth shots, or in Facebook and Instagram posts. Now that you have decided to get your hair done for the big day, you need to know exactly what it is you want to do. You also need to consider how much you’re willing to spend on your hair as that will be taken into consideration.

Sometimes it feels like you’re a kid in the candy store when it comes to hairstyles; there are just so many out there to choose from! Say you have fine hair or something similar, you might want to consider adding some highlights. Summer is about having a healthy glow. What are some of your favorite summer hairdos? Any stick out in the memory? Summer is a great time to experiment with many different looks, so at Continental Hair, we recommend living on the hair…edge! Contact us today to discuss your summer hairdos!

Continental Hair has been around for over fifty years now. It’s quite an accomplishment.

And sometimes there are things that remind me about how long we have been here.

Clients move, and they move on. It’s just a fact of life. But in the past two weeks, I have had calls from women that I had not heard from in over ten years.

The first was from Annette. She came to see me once about twenty years ago while she was in Toronto. She then would order wigs from me and I would ship them down to where she lived in Arizona. I had not heard from her in many years but she called, now from Colorado, asking if I could help her. She said she remembered the service that she got here. So I will be having a visit from her soon.

Another was actually a client of my mother’s. When my mom retired, it seemed that she went on another track for her hair. I had not heard from her in over fifteen years. But, her travels are bringing her to Toronto and she wants to come in and see what I can make for her.

transi37And just this morning I get a call from someone that has two of my wigs that must be at least eleven years old. She wants to see if I can repair them. Well, I will try. There is a law of diminishing returns on old wigs; you repair one thing and another falls part. But I am going to be very happy to see her again.

This is just a reminder of how many women that Continental Hair has worked with over the years. It warms my heart to know that after so much time they feel comfortable and happy about coming in to ask if I can do something for them. It makes me feel special.

I guess that you can’t be around for half a century without doing something special.

Continental Hair has been proud to have helped so many women through their hair loss. Many of the techniques and products we use are exclusive to us and offer a level of natural look and lifestyle that is not available elsewhere. If you are a woman that wears hair now then you are someone that would appreciate some of the things that make Continental Hair unique.

1. Hair Quality

Have you had a problem with the quality of the hair in your systems? We always have clients who are wearing hair coming to Continental to see what we can do differently. The biggest complaint they have is the quality of the hair. This is something that has been getting worse every year, especially for clients on permanent attachment systems. This is an even worse problem for women wearers because they require longer styles and more complex colours. The processed hair from Asia has never been the best solution, but in recent years the attention to quality at the production level has fallen off dramatically. A beautiful hair system must start with beautiful hair, and that is what Continental Hair offers. In cases of a custom order postiche, topper, or wig, we can even show you the hair we will use before we send it away to the factory.
For example, hair quality in a Contressa cannot get any better. It is pure virgin hair and is checked for every variable to make sure that it blends exactly with your own. Not just colour, not just curl, not just length, but coarseness as well. This is something that we take much pride in and love showing off. Virgin hair is also available in our other designs as well. One must remember that it can be limited in the colours and lengths available.

2. Workmanship

The vast majority of hair systems are made, at least in part, by hand. If the workmanship is not excellent then it will show early on in the way the system behaves. Things can go wrong. And sometimes mistakes are made. But these should be rare and be corrected by the salon. Continental Hair has a six-month factory defect warranty on our products. If it was not made right, we will make it right. I will put my manufacturers’ workmanship up against anyone else in the country.

3. Service

Are you not being treated the way you like at your present studio?

Hair is a very important aspect of our lives. This is why we are here. And many people losing their hair are also dealing with difficult circumstances at the moment. And there is another aspect to consider; hair (at least good hair) is very expensive. Continental Hair has the most experience in helping women get the hair they want and keeping it the way they like it. We have been doing this for 50 years. And I will not say that every single person over the last five decades has been happy with us, I will say that the letters and feedback that I get from our (repeat) clients tell us that we do things right.

Another aspect of service is talent. Having the most beautiful hair in the world is nothing if it cannot be styled the way you like it. You have your choice at Continental with some of the most talented and experienced stylists and technicians in Canada. These professionals are there to make sure you get the look you want.

How long your wig lasts depends on how it is made and how you take care of it.

Synthetic Hair

With synthetics, it is very important to avoid high heat. Not only from everyday activities like cooking but especially from high-heat curling irons and blow dryers. The synthetic hair will not catch fire. But it will frizz and have a very unnatural appearance. A synthetic wig, even perfectly cared for, will begin to frizz from the heat generated from your body, and will degenerate more quickly if you spend a lot of time in the sun. For this reason, one can expect a synthetic hair wig to last no longer than 8 to 12 months of everyday wear.
If a wig is worn every day, it should be washed about every two weeks. Because it is not growing hair, it does not get coated with lubricating oils and sweat from the scalp. So it does not require washing as often. To wash your synthetic hair wig, use a mild shampoo in cold water. Rinse in cold water as well. This will ensure the style is maintained. Shake away excess water and leave to dry overnight.

Asian Human Hair

With this type of hair, you can use your hot curling irons and blow dryers. It can be styled, even permed, like your natural hair. However, it will require colouring two or three times a year. This is a result of the processing, which strips the cuticle from the hair shaft. The cuticle is what keeps the colour in the hair.
Wash in cold water, agitating gently, this is required for only 20 to 30 seconds. Do the same with a rinse then brush and style. Hint: for any human hair wig, it is best to have a simple style. That way after every washing you do not have to take great pains to re-style it.

European Hair

It is best if the stylist at the wig salon demonstrates the washing procedure for European hair. Do not expect your hairstylist to know how this is done. Your stylist may be a wizard with your hair, but when styling and especially maintaining this quality of wig only a very few (usually ones that were in business during the 60′s) know how it’s done. Pride can prevent them from admitting that this is not in their area of expertise. Disregard any advice regarding dry cleaning fluids or other exotic procedures as mythical and incorrect.
