How to Donate Hair to Help
Children with Hair Loss
Ready to Donate Your Hair? Here are 6 Easy Steps:
Simply have them follow the guidelines below :
- Measure
Ensure that your hair is 12 inches (30 cm) or longer. The hair should be measured from tip to tip. Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 12 inches. - Bundle
Secure your hair in a ponytail at both ends. Hair must be clean, dry, and in a braid or ponytail before cutting. - Cut
Visit any stylist or hairdresser to cut your hair according to these guidelines. Remember, we do not cut hair at our location. - Bag
Place your cut hair in a clear plastic bag. This keeps the hair organized and protected during transit. - Submit Form
Ensure you include any necessary forms or documentation along with your hair donation to streamline processing. - Mail
Place the bagged hair into an envelope and send it to the designated address.
Hair Donation Guidelines
- Acceptable Hair: We accept virgin hair onlyâno dyed or colored hair. Grey hair is accepted if it is 12 inches or longer, including hair cut years ago if stored in a braid or ponytail.
- Unacceptable Hair: Hair that has been swept off the floor, permed, bleached, or in dreadlocks is not usable.
- Shaving: If shaving, divide hair into sections and secure in braids or ponytails before cutting.
Following these guidelines ensures your generous donation can be transformed into beautiful wigs for children in need. Thank you for your contribution!
We appreciate the generosity of our donors! In order to provide wigs to kids for free, we try to keep costs to a minimum. With the recent increase in postage, we will no longer be sending out letters by Canada Post. If you would like to know that your donation has been received, please include an email address in the plastic bag with your donation and we will happily send you a thank you letter.
Donations can be dropped off in person (Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm or Saturdays 9am to 4pm). Please see address and directions below.
Upon dropping off donations we ask that no photos be taken in our salon to protect our clients privacy.
While we do not have an official thank you ceremony upon dropping off hair, we do provide a thank you letter within 5 business days of the donation. Thank you for understanding this and for your donation.

Hair Donations at Continental Hair
Around 1995, the Canadian Cancer Society asked me if there was something that could be done with the hair donations that they were receiving. An organization called âLocks of Loveâ was making wigs for children with Alopecia and many Canadians wanted to help Canadian kids.
Locks of Love is a great organization by the way. I know the driving force behind it, Greg Taylor, who I count as a personal friend as well as a mentor. His organization has helped kids all over the United States and does beautiful work.

But the wigs are vacuum caps designed for kids with complete hair loss. They are not practical for kids that have partial hair loss, or temporary hair loss. What we do is take hair donations and use the hair to make wigs and partials for children with any type of medical hair loss.
The donated hair is sorted and blended and then made into small-cap wigs for children under 12. These are made available free of charge to any Canadian child that needs them. Most of the children come to us through referrals from hospitals. We have some wigs that are here but are also able to make special custom orders for children that need them and are able to wait for a couple of months for them to be made.
A Heartwarming Letter from a Wigs for Kids Recipient
“Continental Hair is so proud of our Wigs For Kids program. For over 25 years, it has given hundreds of children free wigs with the result that so many are able to enjoy their childhood. And it could never have been done without the fantastic generosity of our thousands of hair donors.”
Hair donation does more than provide a wig; it offers a profound gift of hope and transformation to those experiencing hair loss due to illness. When a child or adult undergoes medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, the resulting hair loss can be a stark reminder of their condition, impacting their self-esteem and sense of normalcy.
- Restoration of Confidence: A custom-fitted human hair wig not only looks natural but also helps restore the confidence and identity of the wearer.
- Emotional Support: The act of receiving a wig can be empowering, enabling individuals to face daily challenges with renewed strength and positivity.
- Community Connection: Through your generous donation, recipients feel a sense of connection and support from a caring community, knowing they are not alone in their journey.
By donating your hair, you contribute to a cycle of kindness that uplifts and supports those in need, allowing them to focus on healing and enjoying life’s moments.
Thank you.
